Teach history in a way that’s fascinating to visual learners and children who are captivated by pictures and timelines. When on Earth? approaches history in a different way than most books, giving context that can put what children learn in school in a broader historical perspective. In more than 60 specially commissioned maps, this one-of-a-kind history book shows where, when, and how history happened.
Find out how the first farmers lived and worked. Discover the Viking world. Learn about the Arab Spring. Beautiful illustrations, 3-D graphics, clear annotations, and fun facts bring history to life and show how it fits in to the world at large. Whether your child is a visual learner or a geography buff,When on Earth? is perfect for any student of history, giving a guide to our shared past and a birds-eye view of the history of life on Earth.

From School Library JournalGr 6–9The editors at DK have compiled a wealth of world history into a compact book. It is organized chronologically into four sections: the ancient, medieval, and modern world and the 20th and 21st centuries. Each section has an overview and a time line. Readers are invited to browse each two-page spread, which are filled with text boxes, photographs and illustrations, maps, and a high-interest fact along the bottom of the page. The inclusion of the early history of Pacific Islanders and the kingdoms of Africa and South America give Westernized readers a broader perspective of world history. Generalizations like “People in central Europe did not build cities, but they created beautiful objects from bronze,” oversimplify, unfortunately. Additionally, many important 20th century happenings—the independence gained by African nations, immigration, and the rise of the global economy—are not included. There are no references listed, though on the acknowledgements page the editors thank those who provided information about the Aborigines and space exploration. VERDICT An attractive and engaging book, though it missed opportunities to further educate readers about their world and the research process.—Hilary Writt, Sullivan University, Lexington, KY
